On a soggy Sunday in September, nearly 1300 people ran or walked a half-marathon course around the shores of West Seattle, passing four Whale Trail sites along the way. Each runner ran for an individual orca, whose ID and life history were printed on their race bibs! The Orca Half Marathon is an annual event that benefits The Whale Trail, produced by Orca Running.

Our partners at Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife covered the story here:

Running for Orcas

Thanks to Orca Running and everyone who participated for making this the most successful event yet, and especially to our volunteers for coming out in the rain!

As the race was ending we learned that J and K pods were heading south towards West Seattle. They were visible from Alki around 2 pm – inspiration for everything we do.  We’ll work on that timing next year!
