AMENITIES

Picnic Facilities, Restrooms, Trails, Wheelchair Accessible

Set on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Slide Ranch combines breathtaking natural beauty with a down-to-earth vibe. Slide Ranch is an educational farm on the Marin coast dedicated to connecting people to nature.  By wandering through our garden, saying hello to our animals, and exploring wilderness and the coast, we give opportunities for people of all ages to see the connection between their own health, a healthy food system and a healthy environment. Slide Ranch makes up 134 acres of Golden Gate National Recreation Area land and provides free public access to the Marin coast, our ranch, and surrounding trails.

WHERE THE WHALES ARE

Whales are most commonly seen from late spring through the early fall. Easy access to whale spotting is at our Yurt Overlook. Follow the trail from the parking lot down to the barnyard. Continue along the gravel driveway and turn left at the chicken coop to get to the Yurt. From the Yurt Overlook, our tide pool trail head leads along the cliffs and down to a tide pool area for further exploration. This trail provides an excellent viewing opportunity for whales, dolphins, and pinnipeds.

SEASONALITY

Summer is the high time to see whales and other wildlife as they migrate past Slide Ranch to get to their breeding or feeding grounds.

HISTORY

Slide Ranch is located on the Marin coast, on land that has a rich history in connecting people to food. The Miwok once fished and foraged for food at this site, and in the late 19th century Portuguese dairy farmers purchased the land and produced milk and butter for residents of San Francisco. In 1969, 134 acres of this fertile coastline were rescued from commercial development and purchased by the Nature Conservancy. The Slide Ranch nonprofit organization was established in 1970, becoming one of the first Park Partners in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
