The Strait of Juan de Fuca is an important shipping lane, and a critical passageway for marine mammals, connecting the Pacific Ocean to the inland waters of the Salish Sea.

The Whale Trail sign is located at an overlook above the community of Sekiu. Looking across the Strait, you may be able to see the southern tip of Vancouver Island.

Sekiu is a favorite fishing spot for humans and marine mammals alike. At different times of year, the waters teem with salmon as they return to their spawning grounds in nearby rivers. The southern resident orcas prefer chinook salmon above all others, as do the fishermen.

WHERE THE WHALES ARE

From the Whale Trail sign, look north across the strait, and and west. Whales sometimes come right into Clallam Bay.
