Moñtana de Oro is a beautiful State Park located just south of Los Osos and six miles southwest from Morro Bay. The park features rugged cliffs, secluded sandy beaches, coastal plains, stream, canyons, and hills, including 1,347-foot Valencia peak. Naturalists, backpackers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders enjoy the solitude and freedom found along the park’s trails. The park’s name, “Mountain of Gold”, comes from the golden wildflowers that bloom in the spring.
The Whale Trail sign at this location is located at the very south end of the Park on the Bluff Trail, right north of Corrallina Cove. 1.65 miles down the Bluff Trail (if you park at the trailhead by Spooner’s Cove) or .55 miles from the Coon Creek parking lot (farthest lot in the park).
WHERE THE WHALES ARE
Montaña de Oro offers one of the best locations on the Central Coast for wildlife viewing. Seals, otters, seabirds, dolphins, and humpback whales can be seen year-round. Gray whales may be seen between December and April during their annual migration. The tidepools at Corralina Cove are a favorite of harbor seals, southern sea otters, seastars, sea anemones, and many more fascinating marine creatures.
