Freshwater Bay County Park is a 21-acre park on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The tranquil bay features a boat ramp, and is a popular place to fish, kayak, and canoe. Freshwater Bay was given its name by Captain George Vancouver, during his exploration of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound.
There are two areas of the park. The upper area features picnic sites and a sweeping view of the Bay and the Strait. The Whale Trail sign at Freshwater Bay is in the lower area, near the boat ramp. A variety of woodland birds can be found in the forest of the picnic area; freshwater birds, including occasional swans, are found in Smith Pond, at the south end of the park; and marine birds are found in the bay.
WHERE THE WHALES ARE
Gray whales and orcas occasionally pass through Freshwater Bay. Dolphins and porpoises have also been seen within the bay. River otters can be seen playing and swimming along the shoreline. Harbor seals and sea lions are commonly seen, and compete with the anglers for a share of the salmon and other fish.
