Don Davis Park lies within Newport’s Nye Beach district, situated on a 2 acre site with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day one can view north to Yaquina Head and Lighthouse and south all the way to Cape Perpetua! A fantastic spot to view whales rain or shine as the gazebo situated on site has a 180 degree view facing the ocean. The park is situated on a bluff, high above sea level for excellent views of the ocean and whales! Outside on the path down to the beach there’s a terrific whale sculpture and partial gray whale skeleton on display!
WHERE THE WHALES ARE
Gray whales are quite the common sight at Don Davis Park as the park offers unobstructed views of the ocean whether within the gazebo or in the parking area. During the spring and winter gray whale migration seasons, whale spottings are the norm. The resident whales that spend most of the summer months arriving in March and tend to hang around until October. These are the best whales for viewing as they are much closer to shore than those migrating up or down the coast and anytime between March and October is a great time to view these whales.
