Discovery Passage forms part of the inner channel between Vancouver Island and the Discovery Islands, connecting Johnstone Strait to the north with the Strait of Georgia to the south. This remarkable marine environment, located in the unceded territories of the Wei Wai Kum First Nations, is home to many cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises).

WHERE THE WHALES ARE

Walk out to the lookout at the end of the pier and keep your eyes peeled for the distinctive dorsal fins and low, bushy blows of resident killer whales entering the Passage in search of fish, and of Bigg’s killer whales pursuing harbor seals. Watch for acrobatic Pacific white-sided dolphins, elusive harbor porpoise, and quick-swimming Dall’s porpoise. The blows, breaching, and tail lobbing of humpback whales can also be seen from spring to fall.
